The word Aq’ab’al signifies “darkness.” In K’iche’ Maya, the term “good night” is Xoq aq’ab’. But this sign is also the first light of dawn upon the horizon. It is the moment when darkness and light are equal. It is dusk and dawn, the equal night and day of the equinoxes, the “in between” times. We cannot come fully to the light until we have recognized and understood our own darkness. This is a time when we may easily “walk in between the worlds.”
